Chemnitz Cultural Capital 2025

The "Purple Path" consists of several stages that are easily accessible on foot or by bicycle. At the various art stations, information boards and QR codes are installed that provide more information about the artworks and artists. The path is mostly barrier-free, but depending on the respective art locations, one should be aware of possible challenges such as uneven floors or difficult-to-access installations. It is recommended to plan the route in advance to specifically target the exhibitions and installations that are of particular interest.

The art and sculpture trail "Purple Path" stretches over a length of more than 100 kilometers and connects Chemnitz with over 30 places in the region. Along this path, artworks and installations by international and local artists are created, addressing themes such as cultural heritage, mining and industrialization, as well as ecological and social sustainability.

Chemnitz and the railway – a connection that made history. Even before the city was connected to the Saxon railway network in 1852, the production of the first locomotives in Saxony began here in 1848. The legendary Saxon Machine Factory, under the direction of Richard Hartmann, was the only plant in the region that manufactured locomotives for railways worldwide.

The "Railway Venue," located on the historic site of the former marshalling yard with its impressive roundhouses, brings this impressive history to life.

The Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz dedicate themselves in the exhibition "Edvard Munch. Fear." to the central theme of fear, which plays a central role in the works of the Norwegian painter. The exhibition highlights aspects such as loneliness, illness, and loss – themes that are relevant both in Munch's time and in the present. Munch's works are shown in dialogue with contemporary artistic positions by Marina Abramović, Neo Rauch, Andy Warhol, and many others. A special highlight is the accompanying "Pavilion of Fear," which is being created in the urban space of Chemnitz. This interactive space invites workshops, readings, and discussions and aims to encourage visitors to engage personally with the topic.

Reading aloud in Chemnitz becomes even more exciting. The CLAXE project (Chemnitz-Lichtenstein Reading Axis) offers a whole series of readings at cool locations – in the zoo, cinemas, on bike tours, and even on hikes. The project brings reading mentors to unusual corners of the city to tell new adventures to children and young people. The city libraries of Chemnitz and Lichtenstein make this possible together – connecting the two cities with a reading axis.

In the foyer of the smac, young visitors can immerse themselves in the creative workshop for the special exhibition "Silver Shine & Buddy Death"! There are plenty of cool crafting and play activities waiting – and the best part: you don't even have to visit the exhibition to join in. There is the opportunity to paint wooden stars, search for treasures in the confetti box, make mining badges, or build Lego tunnels. Creativity is needed here!

The fabric monkey Momo, now a star on Instagram, is coming to Chemnitz in 2025. In the short film project "Momo discovers C the Unseen", Momo, together with a film team and children from Chemnitz and the Czech Republic, embarks on their own cinematic journey. They discover the Ore Mountains, filmmaking, and teamwork. The film premieres in July in Chemnitz and will be shown internationally, including at the short film festival "Elbe Dock" in Dresden and in Malta.
